Just found this after watching on BBCiplayer "Arena: A British Guide to the End of the World". Sadly, one of the soldiers who was unknowingly used as a Guinea pig for the first Nuclear tests by the UK on Christmas Island lost his daughter after he came back due to a rare form of cancer and she loved this song. Now I'm sitting here with tears streaming down my eyes listening to it.

All of today country's musicians on the radio sound the same. Old country had great singers with distinctive sounds, like Loretta, Tammy, Patsy, Marty, Johnny, Hank Snow, Hank Sr, George, Porter, Waylon, Buck, Jim Reeves, Don Gibson, Glen, Willie, Merle, Conway, Dwight, Faron, Ferlin etc.

First, this version by willie was my grandmothers favorite song and she was 59 when it came out. Most hold on to songs from younger days as favs.
Second m, I'm not a giant country music fan or aficionado but I was exposed to a lot cause my gram and father were country musicians and listeners and willie Nelson was considered country in the traditional sense. He was more of a jazz singer up to when this song and album came out, and this record was generally disliked by country music establishment. Reading the comments makes me laugh to see how much has changed and how this now real country and cm musicians if today aren't considered real country by many commenters. Music evolves in all forms. Two things that never change though are that old folks always think the old stuff was way better/ purer and young folks things have to be new to matter.

I flew high. Like Enoch I was scared shitless. The earth fell away with lightning speed. The clouds, the ocean. The feel of loneliness. The fear, I was panicked. Just fly me down, the comfort of ground, I begged. Panicked plea.
